'It has to happen,' said Michael. 'They call it Chaos Theory, don't they? If something can go wrong, it will go wrong eventually.'
'He's right,' Cooper agreed.
'We've all seen it happen,' he continued. 'We started off in a village hall. Thought we'd be okay there but we had to get away. We found ourselves a house in the middle of the bloody countryside miles away from anywhere, that wasn't safe enough either. Built a bloody fence round it but it didn't last.'
'Same with us and the university,' Donna said, leaning closer to the others. 'Looked ideal when we first got there but it wasn't good enough. Things change and we can't afford to just sit still and wait and hope and…'
'And the same thing's going to happen here,' Cooper sighed. 'Something's going to give eventually - the vents will get blocked, supplies will run out, the disease will get in or something else will happen. It's going to take luck more than anything else to keep us safe down here.'
It is two weeks since the survivors arrived at the military base. It is seven weeks since the nightmare began.
The group is forced to live underground in a small area just off the main entrance to the base. The decontamination process has failed, leaving them stranded - imprisoned in the hanger and trapped between the door to the outside world and the sealed entrance to the airtight cocoon where the soldiers sit and wait.
The crowd of bodies on the surface continues to grow in size, drawn there by the heat, light and noise occasionally produced by the three hundred people buried underground beneath their rotting feet. The sheer mass of shuffling figures and decaying flesh above them begins to cause problems for the military with vents and exhaust shafts becoming blocked and useless. Soldiers are sent above ground to begin clearing the bodies away.
Encouraged by a relatively successful first strike which is met with little resistance from the corpses, the officers order their troops to the surface again, this time to destroy them all.
Trapped in the middle of a long and bloody battle between the military and the dead, the survivor's safety is compromised and they are forced to flee the base.
Exposed and vulnerable once again, the group run for their lives without aim or direction.
And then, from out of nowhere, something happens which changes everything and which gives them more answers, options and hope than they had ever thought possible.
